About Drawing Together

From the conference organizers:

“We write books for the hope of the world.” In an interview with Kite Tales blog, LeUyen Pham says this is why she illustrates picture books and creates comics. In organizing these events, we take a generous and inclusive view of comics to include different kinds of graphic narratives. As a medium encompassing many storytelling genres, comics can not only represent but also bring together various communities who have connections to Southeast Asia, both in the region itself and around the world.  Contrary to the view that comics are just for kids, our invited speakers will talk about comics from a range of scholarly, industry, and creative perspectives. These events will expand our knowledge of graphic narratives beyond the usual stable of genres, titles, and publishers. Come for the comics, stay for the conversations, and leave with an abiding interest in Southeast Asia—that is our hope.
