Join BRC's first Branching Out Book Club conversation. Our pick is Julie Otsuka's The Swimmers, a slim volume on routine, memory, and caregiving. It follows Alice, a swimmer dealing with dementia, whose recollections bring her back to her Japanese internment camp days. Meanwhile, her daughter struggles to care for her amid the distance of their years.
Otsuka's rhythmic narrative style and unconventional point-of-view storytelling reframe themes of comfort and loss; the book is sure to inspire conversations on aging, caregiving, and family obligations.
